Korea's social security has undergone a rapid development for the past 20 years. Though the system is now facing many challenges, such as striking a balance between universality and sustainability at the same time, it has so far been a remarkable achievement. The recognition and appraisal of Korea's social security system by international society, however, is relatively low. Nevertheless, many a less developed country is paying closer attention to Korea's experiences as they strive to expand their own social security system. So, it is required of us to make known our achievements and policy developments, and expand our research network to include not only advanced welfare states but also other nations at various development stages.
This policy report gives a summary of the work KIHASA has carried out over the past year to globalize its social security research and to accumulate the related data and information in the process. It introduces international cooperation projects and conferences KIHASA has conducted in collaboration with institutions and experts in the social security field in major Asian countries, including China and Japan. It also introduces the work related to establishing a database on international social security.
