본 연구는 종교계 사회복지기관 자원봉사자들의 봉사활동 참여 과정에 대해 질적으로 분석하고 실체이론을 도출하기 위한 목적을 가진다. 이를 위해 서울 소재 가톨릭 사회복지기관에 소속된 자원봉사자 14명을 연구참여자로 선정하여 자료를 수집하고 근거이론 방법으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 ‘불통을 동반한 시작’, ‘이방인의 생경함’, ‘약소한 존재감’, ‘단절된 커뮤니케이션’, ‘보편적 안정감’, ‘종교적 호감’, ‘봉사활동의 관계성’, ‘유인의 동력’, ‘용이한 적응 조건’, ‘커뮤니케이션 다변화’, ‘역지사지’, ‘내적 성장’, ‘의식의 확장과 뿌리내림’ 등 13개의 범주를 도출하였으며, 이러한 범주들은 소통의 어려움에 따른 중심현상과 이에 대한 전략을 바탕으로 경험과정의 패러다임에 따라 이론화될 수 있었다. 핵심범주는 ‘적극적 커뮤니케이션을 통한 적응과 성장’으로 선택하였으며, 이에 관하여 개인, FBO, 지역사회 수준의 다양한 상황들이 작용하여 영향을 미치는 결과를 정리하고 각 수준에서 실천적 함의를 제시하였다. The purpose of this study is to draw substance theory for the volunteering process of faith-based organizations by qualified research method. In order to achieve this objective, 14 people who participate in the catholic social welfare institutions in Seoul were interviewed and analysed by the grounded theory method with special concern to the communication situations. As a result, a total of 13 categories were drawn: ‘beginning with miscommunications’, ‘resident alien’, ‘nonperson’, ‘severing communication’, ‘general stability’, ‘favor to religion’, ‘relationship of volunteering’, ‘power of enticement’, ‘adaptable conditions’, ‘communication diversification’, ‘putting on the other's shoe’, ‘inner growth’, and ‘extension and rootage.’ These categories could be theorized according to the paradigm of experience process based on the central phenomenon due to exclusion from difficulty of communication and its corresponding strategy. The core category is 'adaptation and growth by active communications'. The influencing outcomes were arranged by applying diverse circumstances to the individual, local, and FBO level and the counterplans of each level were discussed.
