본 연구는 남한으로 이주하여 정규학교교육을 받고 있는 탈북청소년들의 지구시민의식을 측정하고, 이를 남한청소년들과 비교분석하였다. 연구대상은 경기도 소재 H특성화중․고등학교에 재학 중인 탈북재학생 142명 전원과 서울 소재 중․고등학교 4곳에 재학 중인 학생 420명이다. 본 연구에서는 지구시민의식을 지구공동체의식, 국가정체성, 사회적 책임, 사회적 참여, 평등, 신뢰, 다문화의식의 7개 범주로 구성하였고, 탈북청소년들과 남한청소년들의 사회․문화적 이질성을 고려하여 잠재평균분석을 수행하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 탈북청소년들과 남한청소년들은 지구공동체의식, 사회적 참여, 다문화의식에서 모두 양호한 인식수준을 보였고, 집단 간 통계적으로 유의미한 차이는 없었다. 반면, 국가정체성, 사회적 책임, 평등, 신뢰에서는 집단 간 인식수준의 차이가 드러났으며, 특히 신뢰의 경우 탈북청소년들이 남한청소년들에 비하여 매우 높은 인식수준을 나타냈다. 즉, 탈북청소년들은 정부, 언론기관, 공직자 등에 대하여 신뢰하는 반면, 남한청소년들은 이들에 대한 불신 수준이 상당히 높게 도출되었다. 분석결과를 바탕으로 연구자들은 탈북청소년들의 지구시민의식수준에 대하여 종합적으로 논의하였고, 이와 관련한 후속연구에 대해서도 제언하였다. This study attempted to measure and rigorously compare the ‘global citizenship’ levels of young North Korean defectors, who have experienced South Korean formal secondary schooling, with their South Korean counterparts. We defined global citizenship in this study as being composed of the following seven factors: global awareness, national identity, social responsibility, social participation, equality, trust, and multicultural awareness. We then surveyed 142 students at H specialized middle and high schools which were founded for the young North Korean defectors and 420 South Korean students from 4 secondary schools located in Seoul. According to the results from latent mean analysis, there were no statistically significant mean differences between the two student groups regarding global awareness, social participation, and multicultural awareness. However, these two groups of students showed significant mean differences with regard to national identity, social responsibility, equality, and trust. Based on these findings, a number of suggestions have been made for the benefit of the young North Korean defectors as well as for further relevant research.
