청소년의 인터넷 활동이 비행에 미치는 영향은 청소년 인터넷 활동 규제의 중요한 기준이나 이러한 영향에 대해서는 이론적, 경험적으로 합의를 보지 못하고 있다. 이는 종속변수인 청소년 비행과 독립변수인 인터넷 활동 모두 다양한 유형으로 나뉘기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구는 세부적인 인터넷 이용유형(정보검색, 온라인 교류, 온라인 게임, 성인 사이트 열람 등)이 각각 어떤 유형의 온-오프라인 비행과 연관이 있는지 살펴보고, 그러한 연관성이 어떠한 사회적, 심리적 조건 하에서 증폭되는지를 비행친구 수와 자기 통제력을 조절변수로 선정하여 살펴봄으로써 비행 위험을 높이는 맥락을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 중2 청소년을 5년간(2003년~2007년) 조사한 한국청소년패널을 활용하여 고정효과 패널 회귀분석을 실시했다. 온라인 비행 분석결과 성인용 사이트 열람이 6가지 온라인 비행 항목 모두에 강한 영향을 미쳤으며 온라인 교류형 활동이 네 항목으로 그 뒤를 이었다. 온라인 게임은 어떤 온라인 비행 항목에도 유의미한 영향을 주지 않았다. 오프라인 비행에 대한 분석 결과 중, 성인용 사이트 열람은 자기 통제력이 낮아진 상황에서 특히 폭력비행을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 온라인 교류형 활동은 낮은 자기통제력 뿐 아니라 비행친구의 수가 많을 경우 지위비행을 특히 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 청소년의 인터넷 활동이 광범위하게 퍼진 추세 속에서 모든 인터넷 활동을 잠재적 비행요인으로 간주하고 억제하기 보다는 어떤 활용 유형을 어떤 환경적 맥락에서 관리하는 것이 효과적인지 논했다. The purpose of this study is to explore associations between types of Internet use and online and offline delinquency, and to investigate under which social and psychological conditions those associations can be amplified. Data harvested from the Korea Youth Panel Survey (2003-2007) was analyzed using fixed-effects regression analysis. The major findings are as follows: regarding online delinquency, pornography significantly increased all 6 types of delinquency, whereas social media fostered only 4 types. Interestingly, online games had no statistically significant effect on any type of online delinquency. Regarding offline delinquency, pornography specifically facilitated engaging in violent delinquency when students' self-control was poor. On the other hand, social media encouraged status delinquency, not only when self-control was poorer but also when the subjects had more delinquent peers. Based on these findings, we argue that in terms of policy, greater attention needs to be focused on identifying both the type of delinquency and the level of self-control and/or the number of delinquent peers, rather than trying to suppress all internet activities.
