초록
This paper examines whether Korean couples' division of domestic labor influences wives’ fertility plans, and whether this relationship varies by women’s employment status. Based on a sample of married women age 25-39 drawn from the 2012 Korean National Survey on Marriage and Fertility, results of binary logistic analysis are as follows. Among women with one child, couples' division of domestic work exerts a significant influence on the fertility plans of employed women but not unemployed women. Employed women who receive help from other family members are more likely to plan to have a second child, while those who assume a large percentage of domestic work tend to limit their fertility plans. Couple’s division of domestic labor does not affect fertility intentions among women with two children. Employed women rely on other family members rather than their husbands to share domestic work and they tend to limit their fertility plans. It can be due to the gendered labor market system and the lack of social support system. Further study on the relationship between market system, public policy, attitudes toward gender roles, and fertility behavior is needed.
