[영문]As part of the China Seven Cities Study, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine relationships among personal, functional, and social meanings of smoking and smoking behavior among adolescents using a Meanings of Behavior approach. Participants were 7th and 11th grade students enrolled in seven Mainland China cities (N = 4724) roughly divided equally between boys and girls. Boys and the 11th graders were more likely to have tried smoking or smoked in the past 30 days compared to girls and the 7th graders. All three aspects of the meaning of smoking, personal, functional, and social, were significantly associated with tried smoking and smoking in the past 30 days. In comparison to those who had never smoked, students who had tried smoking or smoked in the past 30 days were more likely to see this as an act of autonomy, a means of regulating mood, a way to obtain control over one?s life, and a means of making social connections with others. This is the first study to explore the meaning of smoking among adolescents in modern- day China.
