초록
[영문]A preliminary evaluation was performed of the biking suitability and the prevalence of biking to and from 14 elementary schools in Mesa, Arizona. Seven of the elementary schools were designated as low-busing (2.4% of students) and 7 were designated as high-busing (53.6% of students) schools. Street segments within a quarter mile radius of each school were determined using Geographic Information Systems software with biking suitability determined using a validated instrument. The prevalence of biking was 3.6% for the low-busing schools and 1.4% for the high-busing schools (p qqqlt; .05). Biking prevalence and biking suitability were not significantly related (r = ?31). This preliminary study suggests that factors other than the built environment, including intraindividual, interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy factors are likely to contribute to a child?s choice as to whether to bike to and from school or not.
