이 글은 한국사회에 큰 충격을 주었던 세월호 참사를 고려하면서 ‘트라우마의 사회적 과정’이라는개념을 동원하여 사회학적 접근 모델을 구축해 보고자 하는 것이다. 최근 세월호 참사 이후 한국사회는 분노와 우울, 좌절과 무기력감 등 부정적 감정과 트라우마 증상에 대한 우려가 높아지고 있다. 기존의 정신의학적 분석과 치유가 개개인의 개별적 증상에 집중하였다면 사회과학 모델은 트라우마를유발한 사회구조적인 배경을 분석하고, 트라우마의 종착지점은 바로 이러한 사회적 유발요인을 해결하는 데 있음을 밝히고 있다. 즉, 사회학적 접근은 트라우마를 발생시킨 사회구조적요인을 파악하고,그 구조적 변환(제도개선 및 문화구축)을 최종 목표로 한다. 아울러 트라우마의 치유도 좀 더 거시적인 사회구조적 요인들과 연관시킨다. 이 글에서는 이 일련의 과정을 ‘사회적 과정(social process)’으로 부르고 있다. ‘사회적 과정’은 트라우마의 사회적 배경과 조건을 분석하고, 치유과정에서는 사회의 광범위한 구성원이 사회적 사건을 트라우마로 인식하기 위한 협의를 도출한 후 기억과 의례 및 진실규명과 책임귀속, 피해자의 사회적 관계의 복원을 포괄한다. 이후 트라우마의 사회적 배경이 되었던 기존 사회구조들의 변환 즉, 법적 도덕적 개선 및 문화구축을 통해 치유의 죄종 목표에 도달한다는 것이다. 이 과정에서 중요한 것은 희생자를 수동적 존재가 아닌 적극적 사회운동의 참여자로 주체화하고, 일반 시민들이 사회적 연대를 통해 함께 치유의 과정에 참여하여야 한다는 것이다. The sinking of the ‘Sewol’ Ferry in Spring 2014 brought a great deal attentionto the concept of “trauma”. This paper employs a social-scientific approach topropose a social model of trauma. This approach focuses on the structuralbackground that produced the trauma and argues that the final stage of healingof the trauma is by identifying structural problems that impede new structuraltransformations. The healing method proposed in the model is a social process that combinesindividual trauma with social structural processes at the macro level: 1) obtainingsocial consensus that a particular event or incident is a traumatic one that needsresolution; 2) memorializing the traumatic event so that it is not forgotten throughritual and an offering of condolences; 3) examining the proximate and structuralreasons in order to make an attribution of responsibility; 4) compensating thevictims materially as well as socially to make them whole again in the eyes ofsociety (“face”); 5) re-establishing social relations with the victims; 6) effecting astructural transformation through legal, ethical, cultural, and social means tore-establish and reinforce social solidarity.
