본 연구는 중학생의 임파워먼트와 행복감의 관계에서 자아정체감의 매개효과가 있는지를 살펴보는 것에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 한 중소도시의 중학생 254명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 주요 연구결과는 첫째, 중학생의 학년과 성적에 따라 임파워먼트, 자아정체감 및 행복감에 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났는데, 중학교 3학년이 다른 학년에 비해 임파워먼트와 자아정체감이 유의하게 낮고, 성적이 높을수록 임파워먼트와 자아정체감, 행복감이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 여학생의 자아정체감이 높게 나타난 반면 행복감의 하위요인 중 부정정서가 남학생에 비해 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 중학생의 임파워먼트가 자아정체감과 행복감에 미치는 직접적인 영향을 검증해 본 결과 임파워먼트는 자아정체감과 행복감에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 중학생의 임파워먼트와 행복감 사이에서 자아정체감이 부분매개효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과에 따라 중학생의 행복감을 높이기 위하여 성별에 따른 특성을 반영한 프로그램의 제공과 이들의 자아정체감을 향상시킬 수 있는 기회의 제공이 필요함을 제언하였다. The purpose of this study was to determine how self-identity acted on the association between their empowerment and happiness. For this purpose, we sampled 254 seventh- to ninth-graders from one middle school and sixteen community children centers. The results of this study showed that adolescents’ empowerment, self-identity, and happiness differed by school year and academic performance. The better performing eighth graders showed higher levels of empowerment, self-identity, and happiness. The girls also showed a higher level of negative emotion than boys although the girls had a higher level of self-identity. Second, as for the direct effects of empowerment on self-identity and happiness of adolescents, empowerment had significant effects on self-identity and happiness. Third, self-identity partially mediated between empowerment and happiness of adolescents. On the basis of these results, we suggested the need for differentiating happiness programs for adolescents by gender and programs for allowing adolescents to cultivate self-identity.
