[영문]Nonprofit Organizations advocate for the poor, the disenfranchisedand the oppressed. This process is thought to build social capital andcivil society, while engendering the development of social skills anddeliberation. In recent years, scholars have observed that nonprofitadvocacy organizations have moved from membership associationsto professionalized policy change organizations. Virtual advocacywill move the process farther a field. Astroturf, the creation of syntheticadvocacy efforts, continues this process further. All of this hastroubling implications for nonprofit organizations and nonprofittheory. This paper describes the astroturf phenomenon, reviewspertinent nonprofit theory and speculates on the impact of astroturffor society and the further development of nonprofit theory.
