초록
[영문]Theories regarding the social cognitive origins of parenting risk haverecently emerged. This work not only has implications for the natureof interventions with parents, but also for the approaches taken bythe social service systems that work with them. This paper reviewsthe evidence that there is a significant number of parents with cognitivedisabilities within child protection caseloads and outlines thetypes of human capacity building and organizational developmentthat are needed to support the parents’ needs. Such capacity buildingwill not only increase the effectiveness of child protection interventionswith parents with cognitive disabilities (PCD), but willalso attend to the support and training needs of the professionalswho work with them. Capacity building for work with PCD goesbeyond the typical training provided in social work programs byincluding developmentally sensitive intervention techniques andgreater linkages with systems outside of child protective services.
