본 연구는 정신장애인이 주요 등장인물로 설정된 국내 영화의 내용분석을 통해 영화 속정신장애인에 대한 사회적 표상을 확인하고자 하였다. 관련 선행연구들을 종합하여 네 개의 하위 범주로 구성된 분석틀을 구성하였으며, 2000년부터 2012년 사이 상영된 55편의 정신장애 관련 영화 가운데 각 장애 유형별 최다 관객 수 영화 한 편씩, 총 17편을 모니터링 하여 영화 속에서 그려지는 정신장애인에 대한 사회적 표상을 분석하였다. 첫째, 정신장애인에 대한 원인 지각은 지적장애와 자폐 스펙트럼장애를 제외하고 충격과 스트레스 등의 심리사회적 요인이 중요한 발병 원인으로 그려지고 있으며 둘째, 정신장애인에 대한 대인 지각으로는 비정상성과 식별가능성의 빈번한 설정으로, 손상 정도는 심각하지만 발생 빈도가 높지 않은 질환 유형이 대표적인 정신장애로 인식되는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 정신장애인에 대한 정서적 지각으로는 위험성과 동정적 태도의 이중적 양상이 재확인되었고 넷째, 정신장애의 개념과 주변 사람들의 반응 및 치료대책의 경우, 영화 속 전문가와 당사자, 가족 등의 대사를 통한 임상적 특징의 설명이나 고통의 호소는 정확한 사회적 표상 형성기제로서 영화의 활용가능성을 시사하였고, 공포·스릴러물의 빈번한 설정이 위험성 과장과 극대화를 가져와 감금/배제를 정당화할 수 있다는 우려가 제시되었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 검열체계의 필요성 및 영화계, 관련 학계와 당사자/가족을 위한 제언이 제시되었다. Mental health advocates have long been concerned that the images of mental disorder portrayed in the media negatively affect the public's perception of people with mental disorder. As mental disorder themes in the film increased in number recently, the current study was to find out the social representation of people with mental disorder appeared in domestic films. Of 55 mental disorder related films released from 2000 to 2012, 17 films were analyzed using contents analysis. Four major findings are as follow ; First, Similar to the previous studies, most of the films depicted mental/social stress as the main cause of the disorder. Second, the most frequently portrayed characteristics were bizarreness and noticeable appearance although these are not typical feature of many people with mental disorder. Third, ambivalent emotional perception toward people with mental disorder were reconfirmed. Finally, as the films were a powerful mechanism spreading the stigma of mental disorder, it was indicated that it also has potential for a more constructive role in educating the public about mental disorder and helping to reduce myths and stereotypes, while the frequent setting of horror or thriller theme in the mental disorder related film could justify confinement and exclusion by overly emphasizing violent images of the mentally disabled. Based on the research findings, need of educating film producers, censorship system, and consumer movement were suggested.
