International Conference: Population Changes and Policy Response in East Asia

■KIHASA is holding an international conference on the theme of 'Population Changes and Policy Response in East Asia' on November 2nd(Tue.), webcast on its YouTube channel on November 4th(Thr.) at 1:00 pm. This conference will be held without an on-site audience in compliance with the covid-19 social distancing rules.
■In session I, policies of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand, and in session II, policies of Japan, Taiwan, and Korea will be discussed. Both sessions will be chaired by Kim Doo-Sub, professor emeritus of Hanyang University.
■In session I, professor Than Leng Leng from the National University of Singapore will make a presentation on "population change in Singapore and aging policy initiatives," professor Stuart Gietel-Basten of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on "income protection in older age in Hong Kong," and professor Pramote Prasartkul and professor Napahat Satchanawkul of Mahidol University on "policy responses to rapid population aging in Thailand." There will be a discussion by professor Terence H. Hull of the Australian National University.
■In session II, former guest professor of Seoul National University Toru Suzuki will speak on "population aging and social security cost in Japan," professor james Cherng-Tay Hsueh of National Taiwan University about "social and health policies in response to the rapid demographic change in Taiwan," and Shin Yoon-Jeong, research fellow of KIHASA, on "the changing population of Korea: challenges for welfare policies." Professor Lee Sang-Hyop of the University of Hwaii will join the session as a discussant.
■President Lee Tae Soo of KIHASA said, "This international conference is organized for us to look into the population changes East and Southeast Asian countries are going through and how they have responded to such drastic social changes with policies," adding, "We hope this conference will contribute to deriving policy measures that can effectively respond to rapid demographic change here in Korea."
