Korea’s health care system is in the face of a diverse range of socioeconomic challenges including continued low fertility and population aging, unending social polarization, and a long-term slowdown in growth. In response to these challenges, it is required to develop innovative policy strategies at the national level, which would involve improving and aligning a number of existing health care policies that have developed in a piecemeal fashion. A prominent case in point would be the Basic Law on Health Care(BLHC), which, though having been enacted in 2000 to mandate the direction and prioritize health goals, did little to establish and execute a national-level health care plan.
The purpose of this study is to analyze Korea’s health care system, understand potential challenges it may face in the future and to find ways to set up its future direction and priority goals.
This study will add to the body of evidence and data on the health care system and contribute to deriving action plans for the establishment of a national-level health care plan.
