The goal of this study is to systematically review the academic literature on the association between non-standard employment and health in South Korea. We searched online academic databases to find relevant papers in domestic and international journal by 31 December 2014 and this study reviewed a total of 37 articles. The followings are the findings of this study. First, all 37 studies have adopted quantitative methods and the most frequently used dataset was the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study (N=9). Second, the studies focused mainly on mental health (N=17) or self-rated health (N=13). Third, 31 studies controlled demographic or socio-economic indicators as potential confounders. Fourth, 35 studies reported that non-standard workers had poorer health compared to standard workers. This study suggests recommendations for future research. First, it is necessary to define non-standard employment with concrete criteria, reflecting labor market conditions in Korean society. Second, various health outcome should be examined using administrative data and medical records. Third, it is important to take account of relevant confounders in the data analysis. Finally, future research needs to consider how the health effect of non-standard employment could differ by worker’s gender, age, and industry division.

Abstract

Strategic lawsuit and sequestration against labor union members (SLALU) has been emerging issue in South Korea. However, no studies on the health of workers facing SLALU have been conducted. To investigate the characteristics of SLALU and the health status of workers under SLALU, we analyzed the nationwide survey about workers sued by SLALU (N=231) carried by Sonjabgo (NGO) in South Korea, 2018. This research found that 75.3%(N=174) answered the amount of compensation in SLAU was more than a billion Korean won. The most frequent reason for SLALU was ‘interference with business from occupation.’ In terms of unfair labor practices, 51.3%(N=119) reported ‘I received an unfavorable evaluation because of my union activities’, and 29.7%(N=69) ‘They conciliate or threaten me commenting SLALU.’ The respondents took up 74.1%(N=149) that union members reduced more than half during SLALU. Considering the health status, SPRs were significantly higher among workers under SLALU in every health condition. Our findings show that SLALU may play an important role in the decline of union members and workplace injustice.

Abstract

Few research has been conducted about the association between workplace discrimination and mental health outcomes among medical residents. This study sought to 1) assess the prevalence of workplace discrimination; and 2) examine the association between workplace discrimination and mental health outcomes (i.e. psychological distress, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation) among medical residents, using a cross-sectional dataset of 1,155 Korean medical residents in 2014. Experience of workplace discrimination over the past year and its reason (i.e. gender, educational background, age, appearance, grade, and others) were assessed. Our analysis found that 27.1% (N=216) of male and 42.9% (N=153) of female medical residents experienced workplace discrimination over the past year. Among medical residents who experienced discrimination at work, the most common reasons for discrimination was educational background (32.4%) for male, whereas it was gender (69.3%) for female medical residents. Experience of workplace discrimination showed statistically significant association with psychological distress (PR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.65-3.12), depressive symptoms (PR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.32-1.83), and suicidal ideation (PR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.04-2.49) among male whereas statistically significant association was observed only in the analysis of depressive symptoms (PR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.00-1.48) among female residents. This study found that workplace discrimination was prevalent among Korean medical residents, and it was associated with mental health problems.
