Abstract

This paper empirically examines correlations between women’s employment, fertility and growth, using panel data of 9 East Asian countries, including Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore over the period of 1980-2008. With the cross-country panel data available from the World Bank on female labor force participation rates, total fertility rates, and economic growth rates in East Asian countries, we analyzed correlations between women’s employment, fertility and growth by estimating impulse response functions and variance decomposition, using the panel structural VAR model with imposed long-run restrictions. The results of the empirical panel analysis show that the impact of the other two variables on the target variable is about 6-11%, which is smaller than the 20-40% range obtained from the time series analysis conducted on the variables in each individual country. The study shows that the endogenous correlations among women’s employment, fertility and growth across 9 East Asian countries exist; however, the degree is much smaller as compared to the correlations of these variables in each country. This is because immigrant workforce, especially that of women, still has a meagre presence in the region’s entire workforce, thus having a negligent impact on the women’s employment, fertility and growth in the region. Unlike EU member countries, countries in the East Asia haven't been able to coordinate their economic policies, and workforce mobility is very low due to the lack of legal instruments that promote such mobility.

This study is to analyze factors influencing job satisfaction among workers at social enterprises and to examine whether these effects are moderated by the social mission of social enterprises. Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2009 of 855 workers from 69 social enterprises, and the moderated multiple regression was used to test the interaction effects of social mission. The results showed that education, job-related training, salary, and social mission have positive effects on job satisfaction, but discrimination from supervisor, colleagues, or clients, job demands, and job insecurity have negative effects on job satisfaction. The moderating effect of social mission was examined both job demands and job insecurity on job satisfaction. Based on these empirical findings, the study discusses some implications for improving job satisfaction of workers and for enhancing social enterprises’ sustainability. Also, this study is of significance as an exploratory study which identified the role and function of social mission in social enterprises.

This study is to examine the effects of social service continuity on married women's labor participation and employment status. The samples of this study were 1,020 married women with children under 7 years of age, and this study used data from the first wave of Korea Welfare Panel Survey(KWPS, 2006) to the fourth wave of KWPS(2009). As statistical methods, Panel Logit Analysis and Mixed-effects multinominal logistic regression model were used to test the factors influencing married women's labor participation and their employment patterns. The results were as follows. First, social service continuity has a statistically significant positive effect on married women's labor participation. With relation to employment status, social service continuity has a significant positive effect on self-employed and temporary/irregular job status and has a significant negative effect on regular job status. Second, the economic participation of married women is determined by age, education, spouse's monthly income, living location, and previous occupations. Third, the employment status of married women is significantly affected by age, education level, spouse's monthly income, and previous occupations. Based on these empirical findings, the study has discussed some policy and practical implications to improve married women's labor force participation.
