Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of residential environment on the social network and loneliness of the elderly. In particular, this study examined whether there is a difference in the extent and route of influence between the residential environment and loneliness in the elderly living in community settings and in senior housing. This study surveyed a total of 426 elderly people living in Chungnam and Jeonbuk districts (219 community residents and 207 senior housing residents). The results of this study showed that residence satisfaction affects the loneliness of the elderly indirectly through the mediating effect of social participation. As a result of verifying whether there is a difference in residence satisfaction and loneliness path by residence type, there was a difference in path according to residence type. Specifically, it was found that there was a significant difference between the groups in the path to residence satisfaction and social relations. Only the resident group of the community showed that the effect of residence satisfaction on social relations was significant. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between residential satisfaction and loneliness, which is still in the blind spot of interest, despite the rapid increase in interest in elderly housing policy. Furthermore, this study can be meaningful in that it suggests the implication of the elderly housing policy in the future by comparing the elderly housing group and the community resident group.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the practical adaptation experiences that rural older adults in using pilot smart home services. To this end two focus group interviews were conducted with nine senior citizens living alone in highly-aged areas who received smart home services, a government-supported pilot project. Also, two separate focus group interviews were conducted with 11 key information providers related to the distribution and management of their smart home services. The grounded theory methodology by Strauss & Corbin (1998) was applied for the analysis. Our analysis derived 84 concepts, 39 sub-categories, and 16 super-categories. In the paradigmic dimension, the central phenomenon was <mechanical adaptation stress> and <expansion of social welfare practice>, the causal condition of the central phenomenon was <information acquisition> <safety concern> <social participation>, and the contextual condition was <accessibility> <economic efficiency> <support and management>, and the behavior/interaction strategies for controlling and coping with the central phenomenon was <struggle for adaptation> <experience benefits> <request help> <institutional supplementation>. The interventional situation was <elderly tendency> <presence of help> <convenience>, and the result was <slow but gradually getting used to it>. The core category of the smart home experience of the elderly living alone was determined to be “Slowly but adapting to the smart home with the help of ‘people’”. Based on the main results, practical and policy implications are presented for the development of smart home technology based on elderly users and establishment of an efficient delivery system.

The current study examined the relationship between transition in employment status and psychological health outcomes, life satisfaction among older adults in Korea. This study utilized the 3 waves (2006, 2008, and 2010) of a Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging from the Korea Labor Institute including 4,170 older adults aged 60-105. For the purpose of the analysis of the research question, this study categorized employment transition groups through 3 waves into 5 categories: a continuous employment group, a continuous nonemployment group, a discrete employment group, an employment-to-nonemployment group, and a nonemplyment-to-employment group. The generalized estimation equation (GEE) modeling was utilized for examining the relationship between employment transition group membership and life satisfaction outcomes. The results showed that engaging in continuous employment status or in employment status later in 3 waves significantly associated with the higher life satisfaction with various controls compared to it of the nonemployment group. More research is needed to explore the mechanism behind older people"s trajectory in employment engagement.
