Atypical worker have been excluded in many ways from economy, housing, health, social relations, and labor opportunities. However, few studies have empirically tested the relationship between multidimensional social exclusions and health. In this respect, this study aims to identify the relationship between multidimensional social exclusions and atypical worker’s health, focusing on their self-rated health and depressive symptoms. In particular, this study longitudinally examine the impact of employment status and multidimensional social exclusions on self-rated health and depressive symptoms. The data contains a total of 2,585 typical and atypical workers drawn from the Korean Welfare Pane l(2006 - 2016). Among the findings of the data analysis is that atypical workers’ self-rated health has not changed to a significant extent, while their depressive symptoms have substantially decreased over time. In addition, initial gaps in self-rated health and depressive symptoms between typical and atypical workers tend to slowly decline over time. Finally, results from the model including multidimensional social exclusions presented that unmet health care needs and job satisfaction significantly predicted self-rated health in baseline. For the intercept of depressive symptoms, economic satisfaction, housing, family relations, job satisfaction, unpaid health insurance and unmet health care needs were significant predictors. However, multidimensional social exclusions did not significantly predict the rate of changes in self-rated health and depressive symptoms. Based on these findings, this paper discussed how to reduce the impact of multidimensional exclusions for better health of atypical workers.

This study purposed to understand the dynamic interrelationships between sex and disability, social exclusion, and poverty of disabled women utilizing the second wave data of the Korea Welfare Panel Study in 2007. Through literature review, this study clarified the concept of social exclusion compared to the traditional concept of poverty from the perspective of disabled women. This study also selected five areas of social exclusion that disabled women might experience throughout their life cycle: education, employment, family, health, and social participation. Study results identified that rates of the social exclusion and poverty of disabled women are significantly higher than those of other comparative groups. That is, disabled women experience social exclusion and poverty more often than does any other socioeconomic group. Sex and disability are significant predictors of social exclusion. Further, three areas of social exclusion significantly increased the odds of poverty. Also, disability significantly increased the odds of poverty, and poverty significantly affected five areas of social exclusion. Conclusively, social exclusion and poverty are dynamically interrelated, affecting each other in the context of disabled women's life cycle. This study suggested a few policy and practice implications to reduce the social exclusion and poverty of disabled women based on the findings.

Abstract

Social exclusion is an important social problem, especially for people with disabilities. Empirical knowledge on what explains social exclusion in this population will be essential to understand how disability is socially constructed through the formation of social barriers. The purpose of the current study is to empirically examine the effects of mobility on perceived social exclusion among people with disabilities. The authors reviewed theoretical perspectives in order to develop a hypothesis postulating the relationship between mobility and perceived social exclusion among people with disabilities. Then, to empirically test the study hypothesis, the authors examined the survey data and geo-location tracking data from people with physical impairments. Our analysis of the survey data revealed that two mobility variables (the frequency of going-out and the level of discomfort when going out) were significantly associated with perceived social exclusion. Our analysis of geo-location tracking data revealed that travel patterns were significantly associated with perceived social exclusion among people with physical impairments. Implications were discussed.

The purpose of the research is to investigate the relation between the social exclusion and the psychosocial maladjustment(depression and anxiety) of the runaway youths. In this research, the runaway youths who stayed in the youth shelters for short, middle and long terms were investigated in total 473 persons. From the research results, we found the followings: First, the degree of social exclusion, depression, and anxiety of the runaway youths was not serious. Second, social exclusion depending on the characteristics of social communities was more pronounced with the longer period of runaway and the shorter stay in the runaway youth shelters. And the depression and the anxiety of runaway youth were related with the sex, age, and staying period of runaway youth shelters: Female, older age, and shorter staying in the runaway youth shelters had more depression and anxiety. Third, in the various fields of social exclusion such as economy, society, and labor, the depression and anxiety of runaway youths were enhanced by the experiences of social exclusions. Therefore, for the well adjustment of the runaway youths to the society, the social problems would be tackled multi directional. For the prevention of the social exclusion problems, various policies could be developed. Moreover, several tactics and programs have to be developed and applied to youth shelters in order to overcome the depression and the anxiety for the good mental health of the runaway youths. Lastly, the period of stay in the youth shelters affecting social exclusion and mental health for the runaway youths could be studied personally, professionally, and integratedly.
