This study examined the two dimensional self-esteem trajectories and their predictors for Koreans aged 19 and over. For these purposes, we used the hierarchical linear model for 4,781 young aged (20-39), 4,629 middle-aged (40-59), and 4,735 older adults (60 and over) who participated in the Korean Welfare Panel Study from 2006 to 2015. Major finding are as follows. (1) Related to the positive self-esteem trajectories, the young aged group increased with time, the middle-aged groups maintained with time, and adult group decreased with time. Related to the negative self-esteem trajectories, the young aged group maintained with time, the middle-aged group decreased with time, and the adult group increased with time. (2) The predictors that affect two dimensional self-esteem were divided into demographic factors (age, gender, marital status), socioeconomic factors (employment status, education level, income), and psychological, physical, and social factors (depression, chronic disease, family relationship). As a result, it was found that the types of predictors were different according to the sub-types of self-esteem and life cycle.
본 연구는 우리나라 성인의 긍정적 자아존중감과 부정적 자아존중감의 변화궤적이 성인초기, 중년기, 노년기에 따라서 어떠한지를 확인하였고, 이러한 각 집단의 궤적에 영향을 미치는 예측요인이 긍정적·부정적 자아존중감에 따라서 다른지 종합적으로 분석하였다. 이를 위해서 한국복지패널 1차 년도부터 10차 년도까지 10년간의 종단패널 자료를 활용하였고, 최종분석대상은 성인초기 4,781명, 중년기 4,629명, 노년기 4,735명이다. 주요한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. (1) 우리나라 성인의 자아존중감의 요인구조가 1요인보다 2요인구조가 더 적합한 것으로 나타났다. (2) 긍정적 자아존중감의 경우 우리나라 성인초기에 해당하는 사람들은 시간이 지남에 따라 증가하는 궤적을, 중년기에는 유지하는 궤적을, 노년기에는 감소하는 궤적을 보였다. 부정적 자아존중감의 경우 우리나라 성인초기에 해당하는 사람들은 시간이 지남에 따라 유지하는 궤적을, 중년기에는 감소하는 궤적을, 노년기에는 증가하는 궤적을 보였다. (3) 예측요인을 인구사회학적요인(연령, 성별, 배우자유무), 사회경제적요인(직업상태, 교육수준, 소득), 심리·신체·사회적요인(우울, 만성질환, 가족관계)으로 구분하여 이원적 자아존중감 변화궤적과의 관계를 확인해본 결과, 자아존중감 하위 유형에 따라서, 그리고 생애주기에 따라서 예측요인의 유형이 다르게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 중요한 보호요인이자 내적자산이 되는 자아존중감에 대한 연구 및 실천적 개입을 할 때, 단일차원의 자아존중감이 아닌 이원적 자아존중감 각각을 구별해야 한다는 점과, 생애주기에 따라서 달라야 한다는 점을 의미한다.
