Abstract

This article comes up with theoretical hypotheses about fertility differentials among Korean wives and foreign wives and, more specifically, about effect heterogeneities by their countries of origin. We formulated those hypotheses based on the mix of the immigrant fertility literature and the assortative mating literature, espousing the viewpoint of fertility from a couple perspective. Those hypotheses are tested by fitting data from the 2012 National Fertility Survey and the 2012 National Survey of Multicultural Families to Cox proportional hazard models and discrete-time hazard models. We find that Korean-Chinese and Chinese wives exhibited lower fertility hazards for the first childbirth than Korean wives while Vietnamese and Filipina wives registered similar levels with Korean wives. Regarding the second childbirth, only Korean-Chinese wives showed lower fertility hazards than Korean wives. These empirical findings support the theoretical intersection between the socialization hypothesis from the immigrant fertility literature and the deficit hypothesis from the assortative mating literature. We discuss implications and limitations of our findings and lay out recommendations for future studies.

In this paper, we attempt to unveil the effects of coresidence with parents and parents-in-law on the first childbirth of women in their first marriage. We develop and examine various theoretical perspectives by utilizing the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study from 1998 to 2008. Cox proportional hazards model is employed coupled with technical strategies to prevent plausible bias in empirical estimates due to effect heterogeneity and reverse causality. We find coresidence with mother is likely to enhance the chance of first childbirth after controlling for the number of family members. The estimate seems not to be contaminated by reverse causality. We suggest relevant policy recommendations and outline future research agenda.

This article attempts to unveil fertility differentials between Koreans and international marriage families in South Korea. We fit the 2009 National Survey on Multicultural Families and the 2009 National Survey on Marriage and Fertility Dynamics to Cox proportional hazards model and log normal model. Results show that there was no distinguishable difference in hazards of first and second childbirth between Koreans and international marriage families but an enhanced hazards of third childbirth for international marriage families compared to Koreans. In addition, we notice statistically significant differences in fertility relying on whether international marriage family was formed of foreign-born wife or foreign-born husband. International marriage families with foreign-born husband exhibited significantly lower fertility for first and second childbirth than international marriage families with foreign-born wife and Koreans while there was no difference between the latter two groups. However, both types of international marriage families were at higher risk of third childbirth than Koreans.
