According to the reform in 1998 of the National Pension in South Korea, the pension eligibility age would increase, beginning in 2013, by one year every 5 years from the previous 60 until reaching 65. The increase in the pension eligibility age will lead to a net reduction in pension benefits, which is expected to result in a net income effect and increase the participation of the elderly in the labor market. The impact of pay incentives on people’s labor market behavior is information that is integral to the design of benefits. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the effect of the increase in the pension eligibility age in South Korea on the labor market participation of the elderly, using a monthly Economically Active Population Survey, which is representative and provides sufficient number of observations. Specifically, we analyzed whether there is a difference in the labor market participation rate between the birth cohort 1945-52 with the pension eligibility age of 60 and the birth cohort of 1953-55 with the pension eligibility age of 61. Labor market participation was defined as ‘whether they worked more than 20 hours per week’, ‘more than 30 hours per week’, and ‘working more than 40 hours per week’. For this, we analyzed whether the trend of the labor market participation rate according to the cohort resulted in the discontinuity due to the difference in pension eligibility age after controlling for personal characteristics and labor market variables. However, there was no consistent evidence that the increase in the pensionable age from 60 to 61 had an impact on the labor market participation rate of the elderly.

Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), this study analyzes the relationship between husbands’ and wives’ socioeconomic resources and marital dissolution. Compared to prior research, this study investigates the impacts of husbands’ and wives’ individual and couple characteristics using longitudinal couple data compiled from the KLIPS. Overall, despite the wide range of socioeconomic variables investigated, such as education, earnings, work status, ratio of wives’ earnings relative to total couple earnings, dual-earner status, only limited variables are found to have significant effects on marital dissolution. First, consistent with prior research, this study finds that husbands’ education is negatively associated with marital dissolution. Second, with respect to wives’ socioeconomic resources, this study finds that the effect of wives’ education is contingent upon marital cohorts and marital duration. The data indicate that the positive impact of wives’ education becomes weaker across marriage cohorts and marital duration.

Although the association between perceived discrimination and health has been a main issue in public health, there has been little systematic discussion in a South Korean context. This study sought to systematically review the existing literature on discrimination and health in South Korea and present several suggestions for future research. Selected through online academic databases in English and Korean, 52 empirical journal articles are reviewed for this study. A systemic review identifies four main characteristics among the studies on perceived discrimination and health in South Korea. First, the studies have been published since 2003 and dramatically increased since 2010. Second, most studies have utilized quantitative methods (N=46) with most of them analyzed cross-sectional data (N=45), while five qualitative methods (N=5). Third, the majority of studies focused on mental health (N=42). Forth, the studies dealt with a variety of population groups including foreigners/immigrants (N=21), the elderly (N=12), and the disabled (N=7). Our critical review suggests several recommendations for future research. First, the overlooked forms of discrimination, for instance, based on education, employment status, and appearance, need to be examined in South Korea. Second, a more critical approach toward perceived discrimination scales is required for future research. Third, researchers need to explore other health outcomes beyond mental health outcomes. Forth, more studies with longitudinal dataset are required given that there was only one cohort study. Fifth, future studies should explore an intersectional nature of discrimination and its impact on health.
