The number of seniors living alone and the suicide rate of seniors are rapidly increasing in our society. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of productive leisure activities on the physical and mental health and suicide ideation of elderly living alone. Data was collected by surveying elderly living alone belong to the support centers for elderly living alone located in 3 districts of Seoul area. A total of 322 responded questionnaires were used for analysis. Based on the existing literature, we constructed an analytic model in which participation in productive leisure activities, directly or indirectly mediated by physical and mental health, affect suicide ideation of elderly living alone. The model was tested analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results were as follows. The level of the participation in the productive leisure activities that were active and directed toward goal was lower than the level of the participation in the consumptive leisure activities that were time consuming and amusing. And the variance of participation in productive leisure activities affected suicide ideation of elderly living alone indirectly mediated by physical and mental health. From these results, we drew theoretical and practical implications for social work practice. Productive leisure activities have positive effect on the prevention of elderly suicide in that they could help develop abilities of coping with stress and depression through improving physical strength and increasing social support network. The productive leisure activity programs should be developed and spreaded for improving physical and mental health and preventing suicide of elderly living alone.
