본 연구는 또래관계 속에서 나타나는 2세 영아의 바라보기 행동이 사회적 참조로써 어떠한 의미로 나타나는지를 보고자하였다. 이를 위하여 서울에 거주하는 세 명의 2세 영아들과 그들의 어머니가 연구에 참여하였다. 어머니와의 면담과 예비관찰 3회를 통하여 영아의 발달특성을 파악하였으며, 또래관계 속에서 나타나는 영아들의 사회적 참조행동을 살펴보기 위하여 9회의 본관찰이 이루어졌다. 2세 영아들은 또래관계 속에서 양육자로부터 정서적 위안과 안정감을 얻기 위하여 사회적 참조를 사용하였으며, 점차 그 대상은 변화되기도 하여 자신에게 필요한 정보를 얻기 위하여 또래영아를 바라보는 참조행동을 나타내기도 하였다. 영아의 사회적 참조행동은 자신의 행동에 대한 평가와 통제를 위하여 사용되기도 하였으며, 또래관계에서 발생한 상황을 해석하고 타인의 마음을 공감하기 위해서 사용되기도 하였다. 또한, 처음에는 낯설었던 또래는 점차 의미있는 타인으로 인식되기 시작하였으며, 이는 영아들의 사회적 참조행동의 대상이 어머니에서 또래로 옮겨져 가는 것을 통해 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해, 영아는 상황에 대한 정보를 얻기 위해 사회적 참조를 사용하며 이때 활용될 수 있는 사회적 참조는 자신과 친숙한 사람으로부터 기인함을 알 수 있었다. 더욱이 언어발달 이전의 영아는 사회적 참조행동을 타인과의 정서적 의사소통의 수단으로 활용하고 있으며, 이는 자신에게 의미있는 사람에게 의존하여 선택적으로 발생함을 알 수 있었다. This research aimed at exploring the significance of the "looking behavior" of infants that is called social referencing. For this study, three two-year-old infants and their mothers living in Seoul were selected and observed 12 times. Two-year-old infants in unfamiliar circumstances looked at their mothers often for affective and emotional consolation, and to gather information to understand the situation. Additionally, they used social referencing to control and check the limit of their behavior. The subjects of social referencing of the infants were transferred from their mothers to their peers gradually as the peer relationship was built. Infants mimicked the emotional expressions of others in order to empathize with others and showed pro-social behavior toward other infants. It means that the infants became familiar with each other and coexisted as meaningful others in their context. The results of the study imply that social referencing for two-year-old infants is related to their familiarity and it might take a role as a social and emotional communicative skill until they acquire language ability. Also, their instances of social referencing occur selectively depending on their meaningful others.
