이 글은 최근 한국 사회에 커다란 충격을 가져온 4 16 참사를 둘러싼 ‘세월호 트라우마’ 담론을 ・ 비판적으로 고찰한다. ‘사고-보상 프레임’에 의해 주도되고 있는 세월호 트라우마 담론에 두 가지 잘못된 논리적 전제들이 관통하고 있다. 첫째, ‘트라우마’를 충격적 사건에 대한 개인들의 반응으로 이해하는 PTSD 담론은 세월호 트라우마가 생존자 내지 유족들의 것으로 환원되지 않는 집단적·문화적 트라우마임을 간과한다. 둘째, 개별 행위자들의 증상중심의 질환에 초점을 맞춘 정신과적 치유 담론은 외상의 생산과 재생산의 핵심에 ‘사건-구조-인식과 행위’ 간의 인과관계(causation)가 자리한다는 점을 놓침으로써 고통의 의료화로 나아가는 잘못된 처방을 초래할 우려가 있다. 이 글이 취하고있는 실재론적(Critical realistic) 관점과 최근 사회과학계에서 제출된 이론적·경험적 외상 연구의성과들은 ‘사고-보상 프레임’에 내재한 진단적 실수와 Post-세월호 국면의 외상 과정에 대한 유의미한통찰을 제공하고 있다. This paper critically considers discourses on “Sewolho Trauma” caused by the April 16 disaster that drove Korean society into shock and grief. There are two incorrect logical premises in the “Sewolho Trauma” discourses, led by “the Accident-Compensation Frame”. First, diagnosing “Trauma” as a response to a shocking event by separate individuals, the PTSD discourse overlooks the fact that “Sewolho Trauma” is a collective/cultural trauma, not solely the trauma of the survivors and bereaved families. Second, the psychiatric healing discourse focusing on disease-based symptoms of individuals ignores the context of causation inside of the “event-structure-recognition-action” dynamic at the core of the production and reproduction of trauma. As a result, this superficial diagnosis could lead to an incomplete, commercialized remedy to collective social misery. The critical realist perspective taken by this paper along with the results of theoretical/empirical trauma studies provide the meaningful insight both on the diagnostic mistakes inherent in “the Accident-Compensation Frame” and the trauma process in the post-Sewol Ferry disaster.
