또래관계와 자아존중감은 청소년기의 대표적인 발달 산물로서, 이론적으로 두 변인은 서로 영향을 주고받는 것으로 설명되어 왔다. 그러나 또래관계와 자아존중감을 다룬 다수의 기존 연구들은 두 변인 간의 상호관계를 동시에 고려하지 못하고 일방향적인 관계만을 확인해왔다는 한계가 있다. 본 연구는 또래소외감과 자아존중감 간의 종단적인 상호관계를 검증하기 위해 한국청소년정책연구원이 수행한 한국아동청소년패널조사(KCYPS) 중학교 1학년 코호트의 1차년도와 3차년도 자료를 활용하여 실증 분석을 실시하였다. 구체적으로는 또래소외감과 이원적 자아존중감을 구성하는 자기가치 및 자기비하 간의 자기회귀교차지연모형을 설정함으로써, 보다 풍부한 이론적, 실천적 함의를 제시하고자 하였다. 분석 결과, 중학교 1학년 시기의 또래소외감, 자기가치, 자기비하는 중학교 3학년 시기의 각 변인과 모두 유의한 관계가 있었다. 또한 또래소외감과 자아존중감 간의 교차지연 효과를 살펴보면, 또래소외감은 이후의 자기비하에 유의한 영향을 미치는 반면, 자기가치와 자기비하는 이후의 또래소외감에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 자아존중감의 하위 요인인 자기가치 및 자기비하 간의 교차지연 효과 분석 결과, 자기가치가 이후의 자기비하에 미치는 영향만이 유의하게 나타났다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 이론적 함의와 함께 우리나라 청소년의 또래소외감을 감소 및 예방하고 자아존중감을 향상시키기 위한 실천적 함의를 논하였다. In theory terms at least, peer relationships and self-esteem, the two most important developmental outcomes in adolescence, have a reciprocal relationship. However, most previous research has failed to examine the bidirectional influence between these variables. The present study aimed to examine the longitudinal effects of each on the other, using the 7th grade cohort’s data (n=2259) of the 2010 and 2012 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. Specifically, this study examined the auto-regressive and cross-lagged effects of peer alienation and two dimensions of self-esteem, self-worth and self-deprecation, between the first and third year of middle school. The auto-regressive results showed that the levels of peer alienation, self-worth, and self-deprecation in the first year was positively related with the levels of each variable in the third year. The results of cross-lagged effects suggested that peer alienation positively influenced the later self-deprecation, while neither self-worth nor self-deprecation affected peer alienation over time. Additionally, self-worth was found to influence the later self-deprecation. Based on these results, the theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.
