본 연구는 최근 3년간의 국내 베스트셀러 그림책 98권에 나타난 유아인성교육 덕목의 경향성과 그 내용을 분석하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 교육과학기술부(2012)에서 제시한 인성교육 덕목인 배려, 존중, 협력, 나눔, 질서, 효의 6가지 범주로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 베스트셀러 그림책에는 총 281개의 덕목 내용이 분석되었으며 배려, 존중, 협력, 나눔, 질서, 효의 순으로 나타났고, 이 중 배려와 존중은 비교적 자주 나타난 반면, 효는 거의 포함되지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 하위범주들을 모두 분석해본 결과 1위가 가족을 위한 공감과 배려(14.2%), 2위가 자신과 전통문화에 대한 존중(10.3%)인 것으로 나타났으며, 각 덕목들은 그림책에 다양한 내용으로 적용되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과, 유아를 위한 그림책에 다양한 인성교육 덕목이 포함되어 있기는 하지만 특정 덕목에만 편중된 것으로 나타나, 좀 더 다양한 인성교육 덕목을 포함한 그림책이 대중적으로 다루어질 필요가 있음을 시사한다. This paper aims to analyze the tendency and contents of character education displayed in picture books for children. For that purpose, a set of 98 bestselling picture books in the past three years were selected for analysis. Six categories of character education presented by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(2016) were adopted for this research: consideration, respect, cooperation, sharing, order and filial piety. The findings can be summarized as follows. First, we found that these picture books contained the contents dealing with all the six virtues and their nineteen subcategories. The category of consideration was presented more than the other categories, followed by respect and cooperation. In particular, filial piety was slightly expressed, whereas consideration and respect were relatively often presented in the picture books. Second, the analysis of subcategories found that consideration for family and respect for oneself and traditional culture were the top two elements presented in a variety of ways in the books. It might be concluded that these picture books dealt with a very limited number of virtues, though a variety of virtue categories were expressed in them. Thus, it is necessary that picture books for children should deal with a balanced list of virtues of character education.
