Choi:
South Korea is known to have the fastest aging population in the world. By 2025, it will be a super-aged society, with people aged 65 and over accounting for more than 20% of the total population. Obviously, the elderly will be the main group affected by care issues. What are the key challenges in terms of policy direction for care services and innovation in the care system? Professor Jeon Yong-ho, could you please share your thoughts?
Jeon:
We are now in a situation where we can no longer rely solely on individuals or families to provide care. This makes the public care system all the more important. In this context, we need to work harder to improve long-term care insurance and personalized care services for the elderly. In particular, while more than 10% of the elderly population is currently covered by Long-Term Care Insurance, the types of services currently being provided are very limited and mostly focused on home care. Services such as home-visit rehabilitation or mobility support, which are in high demand, should be newly included in LTC benefits and made more widely available.
