Have you heard of the Population Diversity Index? It is designed to measure not only the percentage of foreigners in a given area, but also the diversity of their nationalities. The index is straightforward: the closer it is to zero, the more homogeneous the population is; the closer it is to one, the more diverse the population’s national backgrounds. So, what has been the recent trend in Korea’s Population Diversity Index? In 2018, the national average was around 0.0527; however, by 2022, this figure had risen to 0.0568. This upward trend is not limited to specific areas―it has been observed nationwide, including in rural and fishing communities as well as in the capital area. It is also worth noting that the under-18 population, when considered separately, is showing a much steeper increase in diversity. This suggests that classrooms across Korea are likely to see more students from diverse national backgrounds in the future.
