Have you heard of the term resilience?
These days, you’ll often come across it in psychology and self-help books at bookstores and libraries. Resilience refers to the ability to respond to and recover from external shocks quickly and robustly. For this reason, the concept is widely used in public health, particularly in discussions about pandemic preparedness and response.
The World Health Organization defines resilience as the capacity to anticipate, withstand, and recover from a wide range of events and shocks. It also stresses that resilience is tied not only to disruptive crises but also to everyday challenges. Likewise, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has been emphasizing resilience as a key factor in evaluating health systems, alongside efficiency, equity, and sustainability.
So, how is Korea doing when it comes to resilience? And what key issues need to be addressed to ensure that our health system can operate resiliently in the face of future infectious disease outbreaks?
For more details, see the research monograph from KIHASA.
