How does the Dementia Public Guardianship Program work?

Lee:

The process begins with identifying individuals who may need guardianship. This can be done either by Dementia Safety Centers, which directly identify such individuals, or through referrals from Community Service Centers or Senior Welfare Centers, which are better known to the public. Once potential wards are identified and referred to a Dementia Safety Center, the center convenes a Guardianship Support Committee. The committee reviews each case to determine whether guardianship is necessary and, if so, what type of guardianship would be most appropriate. If the committee concludes that guardianship support is needed, the Regional Dementia Center selects suitable candidates to serve as guardians. During this stage, the Dementia Safety Center prepares the required documents to file a guardianship petition, with legal assistance provided by a lawyer affiliated with the Central Dementia Center. The completed documents are submitted to the family or district court. If the court approves the petition, the guardianship officially begins.
