KIHASA and the National Health Insurance Service jointly held the 2025 Korea Health Panel Survey Data Seminar on Thursday, July 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Conference Room of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This seminar provided an overview of the Korea Health Panel data, covering both the Phase 2 (2019-2023) and Phase 1 (2008-2018) panels. The overview included the structure and main contents of the panels, as well as recent updates. To help researchers make more effective use of the panels, the seminar also offered some cautions regarding the use of the data and introduced actual analysis cases.

In the morning session, from 10:00 to 11:45, KIHASA Research Fellow Lee Sue-Hyung gave a presentation on “The Overview of the Korea Health Panel Survey and Its Main Features.” This was followed by a series of presentations from various experts on the survey items, along with guidance on how to use those items.

In the afternoon, starting from 1:00 p.m., KIHASA Associate Research Fellow Lee Hye-jeong gave a presentation on “Understanding and Applying Weights,” followed by KIHASA Specialist Yeom Ah-rim’s presentation on “Examples of Data Structure and Processing Using SAS.”

From 2:30 p.m., Min In-Sik, Professor of Economics at Kyung Hee University, gave a special lecture on research methodology, titled “Matching and Causal Inference”. The lecture covered the concept and application of matching techniques for estimating causal effects in observational data and explained advanced causal inference methods such as the Synthetic Control Method (SCM)Generalized Random Forest (GRF), and Heterogeneous Difference-in-Differences (DID).

Research Fellow Lee said, “We hope this seminar will give researchers a better understanding of the structure and potential applications of the Korea Health Panel Survey, and help them apply it more effectively in their research.”

The Korea Health Panel Survey is a research project that has been conducted jointly by KIHASA and the NHIS since 2008. It aims to assess healthcare expenditure at both individual and household levels, identify factors influencing healthcare utilization, and develop indicators relating to the funding of medical expenses.
