Mid- to Long-term Development Strategies for Pediatric Clinics
Pediatrics is one of the four major traditional medical specialties and plays a very important role in the national medical system. But pediatric clinics in Korea are struggling financially due to swift changes in circumstances. Therefore, it is necessary to study mid- to long-term development strategies for pediatric clinics from a social perspective.
According to the Entry and Exit criteria and the National Insurance Revenue criteria, the financial situation of pediatric clinics in Korea is not good and their average revenue lies below the average level of all medical clinics. And the manpower and equipment in the intensive care unit are especially in shortage.
The low birthrate leads to the the lower demand for pediatric services. And the low birthrate and aging society bring about new problems for the pediatric clinicians. These also mean new demands and new opportunities for pediatric clinics. The supply of pediatricians is expected to be 12% oversupplied by 2015 and 10% undersupplied by 2030.
It is recommended to improve the financial situation of the pediatric clinics, for example, through additional charges or the exemption of out-of-pocket payments for young children. And it is also recommended to exploit the changed new demand in order to create more social value. In the long run, it is the best strategy to increase consumer surplus through creating value for society.
