Abstract

This study empirically examines how the share of household debt by purpose and its interaction with income groups affect welfare attitudes in the context of a financialized welfare state, using data from the Korea Welfare Panel. First, we observe that low-income households rely primarily on consumption debt (living and medical expenses), whereas general households carry a larger share of investment debt (housing loans). Next, we analyze how the interaction between household type and debt purpose shares shapes willingness to expand welfare spending. The results show that as consumption debt increases, low-income households show a stronger preference for both social insurance (pension and unemployment benefits) and redistributive programs (support for the poor and persons with disabilities), while investment debt shares exhibit no significant relationship with overall welfare attitudes. Although medical debt shares are generally insignificant, a reverse pattern appears in attitudes toward disability support, where support among general households slightly increases. These findings demonstrate that the nature and purpose of debt are key pathways shaping welfare demand and highlight the need for debt safety nets and tailored risk-management strategies by income group.

Abstract

This study conducts an integrative literature review to identify the determinants of mental health among youth experiencing double precarity, a group characterized by the intersection of asset deficit and labor instability. A total of 54 key studies published between January 2010 and November 2025 were selected and analyzed following PRISMA guidelines. Data were sourced from major databases including RISS, DBpia, KISS, and Google Scholar. The analysis applied Whittemore and Knafl’s integrative review methodology, incorporating recent research trends that reflect the deepening context of asset inequality and social isolation in the post-pandemic era. The results indicate that, first, for youth with a fragile asset base, debt functions not merely as a financial burden but as a core mechanism of indebted labor, which restricts labor choices and enforces the immediate generation of cash flow. Second, this debt-driven compulsory labor exacerbates specific physiological damage, such as chronic fatigue and physical exhaustion, by inducing sleep deprivation and depleting cognitive resources. This study identifies a specific pathway of embodiment where these factors lead to a collapse in mental health, including depression and suicidal ideation. In conclusion, this study redefines the youth crisis not as an individual failure of adaptation, but as a structural pathology resulting from dual exclusion in both asset and labor markets. Accordingly, the study proposes policy alternatives focused on the restoration of time sovereignty through repayment deferrals and the establishment of an integrated support system linking finance and mental health.
