Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify individual and regional level factors that affect depression among the elderly. It also verified the interaction effect between the two levels. To obtain this, multilevel analysis was conducted on 1,987 elderly people aged 65 and over in 16 cities and provinces nationwide. The main results were as follows. First, as a result of the unconditional means model test, the depression of the elderly appeared differently according to the region, which made it reasonable to apply the multilevel analysis. Second, social resources of the elderly showed differences according to the region. Third, social resources such as, trust, social cohesion, and citizen participation among elderly have a significant effect on depression of the elderly. Finally, the interaction effects between social cohesion and community poverty rate, residential welfare facilities and health care resources on the depression were verified. Based on these results, the policy implications and practical intervention plans for improving mental health of the elderly were discussed.

The purpose of this study were to examine the actual states of the handicapped people living in a community and to investigate the present conditions and future tasks of public welfare services or programs of the ward office, an asylum, and social welfare centers for the handicapped people in a community. The key services of the ward office are provision of the prosthetic instruments for handicapped people, payment of the costs of living and medical care, and school expenses for their children. The ward office also provides financial support to a medical center in the asylum. The programs of the asylum and welfare centers for the handicapped people are classified as physical, emotional, educational, social, occupational restoration programs. For the enhancement of the public welfare services for the handicapped people, more various services or programs based upon the needs of divergent subjects should be delivered, and financial support from the local government should be increased.
