Introducing the notion of contextualization and of attentive listening, this article proposes that anti-ageist gerontological research in the ageing era needs to endorse old people as the subjects of action and narrative. The dominant ageist culture and media of Korean society regard old people as culturally alien and negative other, and the mainstream gerontological research is not free from this tendency. The current trend of gerontological research to focus on the problems, adjustment, and life-satisfaction of old people risks the danger of reinforcing the already negative image of old people. Gerontological research as anti-ageist cultural practice is required in these circumstances. In order to achieve that goal, what needs to be examined is how multiple ideologies and structural forces forge old people"s positionality in concrete contexts of everyday life, and how old people respond to the given situation as the subjects of action and narrative. Ironically, the ultimate task of gerontological studies is to loosen the culturally otherized boundary of old age and the gerontology"s academic boundary itself by exposing the barrenness of old age by itself as a variable. Research on old age as anti-ageist cultural practice needs to examine constantly if the perspective of research itself is unconsciously reproducing the ageist discourse of Korean society.

This study is aimed at concretizing Korean pre-elders’ friendship experience by examining the structural and functional aspects of friend networks, and finding out, combined with gender, how these characteristics affect happiness. To that end, a face-to-face interview was conducted with 1,652 men and women aged 50~69 living in urban cities, and the data was analyzed with ordered logit model. The major findings are as follows: First, pre-elders had on average 6.1 close friends, contacting with them at least once a month, and half of their friends were living within 1 hour range of their major transportation. Second, on the functions of friendship, pre-elders experienced fair amount of companionship, existence of confidants, and social stimuli from their friends. Third, for pre-elderly men, receiving social stimuli from friends had a positive impact on their happiness. But most of all, not having a spouse decreased their happiness significantly, suggesting that single pre-elder men population should be watched with care. Fourth, for pre-elderly women, the number of friends, living distance, and having a confidant boosted their happiness. This study explains the friendship experience of a vast population of pre-elders in Korean cities, and provides implications for the development of programs to fertilize a social network of the future elderly.

This research aims to understand the process of crisis management communication in hospital medical disputes and explore a reasonable and theoretical model for that. The data were collected from in-depth interviews with twelve medical dispute professionals at all levels of hospitals in Seoul, Busan and Kyung-nam Province. ‘The Process Model of Crisis Management Communication About Medical Dispute’ is divided into six steps, ‘Preparation for Crisis Step’, ‘Issue Management Step’, ‘Explanation Step’, ‘Negotiation Step’, ‘Legal Action Step’ and ‘Controlling and Learning Step.’ The most important point is that not every case goes through all of these steps, and some cases even skip some of them. Also, preparation for a new crisis phase tends to follow the resolution of a crisis. Most existing studies have focused on a limited number of steps centering around press reports after the crisis has been known, but this study looks at all steps in crisis management. This study finds that the crisis of medical dispute goes through selective and sequential steps that are unlike the linear process as presented in previous studies. Also, the activities in before and after crisis steps were not enough for crisis management such as planning, evaluation, and compensation. Moreover, some strategies that not mentioned in existing crisis communication rhetoric theory including ‘listening’, ‘Explanation’, ‘Contact by the Third Party’, ‘delaying action’, ‘higher authority’ have been used. That strategies can be explained as a kind of ‘Negotiation Communication Strategy’. This is one of the most significant findings of the present study.
