Abstract

This study explored how adverse life experiences of isolated and reclusive young adults during pre-adulthood were associated with adverse experiences in adulthood. Using data from the 2022 Seoul Metropolitan City Isolated and Reclusive Young Adults Survey, 486 participants were selected as the study sample. The findings are as follows: First, adverse life experiences during pre-adulthood were classified into three types: Complex High-Adversity (17.5%), Moderate-Adversity (65.2%), and Low-Adversity (17.3%). Adverse life experiences during adulthood were classified into four types: Complex High-Adversity (21.2%), Employment and Relationship Frustration (22.6%), Academic Frustration (16.7%), and Low-Adversity. Second, the transition analysis showed that adverse life experiences in pre-adulthood and adulthood were not isolated events but were interrelated, exhibiting patterns of maintenance, intensification, and alleviation. In addition, the analysis identified transition types that were not captured in the transition probability analysis. Third, based on the transition patterns, the participants were categorized into four groups: the High-Risk Maintenance Group (8.4%), the Low-Risk Maintenance Group (13.8%), the Upward-Risk Transition Group (45.3%), and the Downward-Risk Transition Group (32.5%). Fourth, significant differences among groups were observed in gender, household socioeconomic status, health status, and the desire for and attempts to change their isolated and reclusive status, according to the transition patterns. By situating adverse life experiences within a developmental continuity framework, this study contributes to the understanding of heterogeneity among isolated and reclusive young adults and provides an empirical basis for tailored interventions.
