This study examines whether the diffusion of generative AI differentially affected the mental health of young workers across industries with different levels of AI exposure. Using the 2022 and 2024 Youth Life Survey, we analyzed 7,117 workers aged 19 to 34 employed in industries with high or low AI exposure before and after the release of ChatGPT. We measured depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and applied a propensity score weighted difference-in-differences approach. Propensity scores were estimated for each period and combined with survey design weights. Depression increased significantly more among young workers in industries with high AI exposure than among those in industries with low AI exposure. Exploratory mediation analysis indicated a significant indirect effect through perceived job loss risk related to technological displacement. Life satisfaction, burnout, and self-rated health also showed parallel deterioration. This study provides initial quasi-experimental evidence on the mental health effects of generative AI diffusion among young workers, suggesting that AI policies should address mental health in addition to employment support and vocational training.
