This study analyzed suicide prevention news stories given the impact of media contents on the public’s health behavior. News articles providing portal sites NAVER were selected as samples for the time period of October 2014 to October 2015, these data were collected by web crawling method. ‘suicide’ and ‘depression’ were used as search words, random sampling was used to select the sample news. Viewing depression treatment as a way of suicide prevention behavior, we assessed the way suicide prevention news communicated depressive symptoms and treatment based on five factors of Health Belief Model. Results show that less than half of suicide prevention news contained the susceptibility component, while most emphasized the severity of depression leading to suicide. Furthermore, very few news stories delivered information on the benefits and barriers of depression treatment. Regarding cues to action, active cues suggesting professional consultation with doctors were lacking, as opposed to more frequent mention of passive cues such as exercise and dietary treatment. Over-emphasis on the severity, along with the lack of the susceptibility and psychological barriers, appears to increase stigma toward suicide and depression. Lack of the benefits and active cues to action may contribute to the public perception failing to understand depressive symptoms as a treatable disease. Taken together, the results provide practical and scholarly implications on the role of media contents for suicide prevention.

This exploratory study attempted to develop more practical and realistic guidelines for media reports on suicides in Korea, which as of 2015 had the highest suicide rate among OECD countries for 13 consecutive years. An online survey was conducted in which 634 Korean citizens participated. This survey inquired as to the degree to which the respondents believed each specific item exposed in media reports covering suicides (e.g., “providing information on the method used to commit suicide,” “reporting on a celebrity suicide”) encouraged people to have positive or less negative perceptions of suicide. The specific items used in the survey were collected from several media guidelines used in 16 different countries as provided through the IASP (International Association for Suicide Prevention) website. The participants were presented with 43 different items (issues) and asked whether these items would lead people to have positive or negative perceptions of suicide. The author was able to identify some items that were considered by the 634 Korean participants to be more important than others with regard to preventing suicide. Participants were asked to disclose few personal details. Information such as the level of depression they were experiencing at that time could be considered important variables in studies regarding suicide. Based upon the results, this exploratory study suggested more practical and (or) realistic guidelines for the media professionals to use when covering suicides in Korea, a society that has experienced a serious suicide rate for many years.;자살관련 미디어 보도는 베르테르 효과 등 부작용의 원인이 될 수 있으며, 향후 또 다른 자살과 관련된 일종의 부추김 현상이라는 측면에서 본격적으로 논의해야 한다는 지적이 있다. 대상자들에게 의견을 요청하기 위해 활용한 개별 항목들은 IASP(International Association for Suicide Prevention) 웹 사이트에서 확보한 각국의 자살보도 미디어 권고 기준에서 발췌하였다.

This study is about news articles dealing with suicides which are thought to be one of the critical reasons behind increasing suicide rates in Korea. The researchers investigated how news articles are different from each other in styles depending on the types of news media. As a sample of this study, five traditional newspapers and five Internet news services were chosen along with actual news articles on suicides from January 1, 2011 to May 31, 2011. All articles that appeared in the media during the time period were collected through keyword search in major portal web sites. This study found that there were more articles that provide very detailed information about what methods people used in committing suicide and specific information about the victims, and that use direct expressions in headlines in Internet news media compared to traditional news media. It was also found that the suggestions from the Korea Suicide Prevention Association and the Ministry of Health & Welfare on limiting specific expressions and information which could cause people to commit suicide were not strictly observed both in Internet news services and traditional news papers.

Korea’s high suicide rates accompany negative attitudes toward suicide and those who commit suicide. To address the problems of Korean society’s dominant perception toward suicide, we aim to critically examine media’s role in reconstructing reality. Focusing on stigma toward social minorities, we examined how those with suicide attempts were shown in a TV documentary. This study analyzed KBS 1TV’s ‘Happiness Generator: Zero Abandonment Project’ based on the Todorov and Chatman’s narrative analysis method to see the mainstream perception of suicide in Korean society. Results identified two dominant ideologies on suicide. First was the ‘individual responsibility’ argument suggesting that suicide is a personal matter in which individuals should cope with, without relying on society. The individual responsibility argument attributed the causes of suicide attempts to the individual themselves which, in turn, can be overcome by their own will. The second ideology was the ‘normal family’ argument, emphasizing that stable emotional states can be only obtained in a normal family structure. Those with suicide attempts were described as people from unhealthy, abnormal families. The normal family argument repeatedly reinforced the stereotypical perception that single parent families or torn-apart families cannot help but yield troublesome individuals.
