This study aimed to explore in depth the parenting experiences of women who gave birth to multiples and to derive policy implications relevant to households with multiple births. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 mothers of multiples. The collected data were analyzed using constructivist grounded theory. The analysis identified several core themes, including: ‘The mother who cannot be a mother’; caring for ‘different’ children who are both premature and multiples; ‘Everything is my fault’; ‘A sinner to everyone’; ‘A vanished body and mind’; ‘Mechanized caregiving and a home transformed into workplace‘; ‘The economic burden of “extra” care due to multiples’; 'A “disconnected” outside world'; An ‘uncomfortable’ social gaze; ‘Mothers’ teetering on the edge; and moments of struggle for survival and recovery, expressed as ‘Yes, I was a mother.’ Based on these findings, policy implications were proposed, including the adjustment and redesign of maternal and newborn health management programs and early childhood health management programs to reflect the specific and complex needs of families with multiples; the establishment of a continuous monitoring system; and the development of empirical data through comprehensive surveys of multiple-birth households.
This study aims to explore the process through which North Korean–born settlement support workers experience and cope with secondary traumatic stress(STS), and to examine the conditions under which such experiences may lead to recovery and reconstruction of work meaning. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten North Korean–born settlement support workers, and the data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The findings indicate that workers’ STS emerged from causal conditions such as repeated exposure to clients’ traumatic narratives, emotional identification with clients, and excessive emotional labor, within contextual conditions including organizational emotional neglect and cultural marginalization. In response, workers utilized intervening conditions such as peer solidarity and religion-based emotional resources, which enabled emotional regulation and self-care strategies. Under certain conditions, these processes contributed to psychological recovery and reconstruction of work meaning. This study conceptualizes secondary traumatic stress among North Korean–born settlement support workers not merely as an individual vulnerability but as a structural and processual phenomenon shaped by organizational and identity-related contexts. The findings suggest the necessity of organizational-level interventions, including regular supervision and emotional support systems, to protect settlement support workers and enhance the sustainability of refugee support services.
