This study aimed to longitudinally categorize the changing patterns of adolescents' general happiness and explore the factors influencing each trajectory. Data from the 10th (2015; 471 students in grades 4-6), 13th (2018), and 16th (2021) waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) Children's Supplementary Survey were analyzed using Growth Mixture Modeling (GMM) and the 3-step approach. The analysis revealed that while adolescents' happiness generally decreased over time, individual trajectories were classified into five distinct latent classes: the 'High-starting rapid-decline' class (15.4%), 'High-school-period rapid-decline' class (14.2%), 'Mid-high-starting gradual-decline' class (32.8%), 'High-starting gradual-increase' class (25.7%), and 'High-school-period recovery' class (11.9%). Using 'High-starting gradual-increase' class—the most adaptive developmental trajectory—as the reference group, the study explored influencing factors and found that low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, and experiences of school violence victimization in early childhood (elementary school period) were identified as key predictors for entering risk trajectories, whereas parental factors did not show a significant influence. These findings provide empirical evidence for the heterogeneous developmental trajectories of adolescent happiness and suggest the need for early identification of at-risk groups and the development of prevention-oriented, customized intervention systems.
Climate-related disasters are increasing in frequency and severity, with impacts extending beyond physical health to include mental health. This study aimed to develop and validate a measurement tool specific to the Korean context, the Climate Crisis Mental Health Scale (CCMHS), to systematically assess mental health risks associated with the climate crisis. The conceptual framework was established based on climate risk determinants as outlined in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. Five preliminary domains and their corresponding items were developed through a literature review and an expert survey. An online survey using the preliminary scale was conducted with 2,019 adults aged 19–64. Through factor analyses and subsequent reliability and validity testing of the three domains measuring mental health risk—dysfunction, emotion, and worry—the CCMHS was finalized as a 17-item standard version and an 11-item short-form version, within a broader five-domain framework including sociodemographic characteristics and climate crisis-related experiences. The CCMHS enables a multidimensional assessment of climate-related mental health risks by integrating emotional and functional dimensions and provides an empirical foundation for climate adaptation policies that incorporate mental health considerations in South Korea.
