The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences and meanings of mental health help-seeking among young people in Korea and suggest directions for mental health service policy and practice specific to this population. Five study participants who had experienced mental health problems such as depression were recruited via purposive sampling and invited to an individual in-depth interview. They were asked about perceived symptoms and needs for help at the onset of the problem, searching for helping resources and decision-making, and process of service use and related experiences. The qualitative data were analyzed by following an inductive coding process, and the meaning units drawn from the data were grouped into 5 categories and 14 subcategories. The 5 categories are ‘life full of pain and instability’ ‘cumbersome process of help seeking’ ‘first-person experience of service use’ ‘process of getting more and losing less’ ‘young consumers’ evaluations and suggestions’. In conclusion, implications for provider reflection on her practice and directions for service delivery were made as ways to help facilitate help-seeking behaviors among young people who hold an identity as a mental health service consumer.
본 연구의 목적은 정신건강상의 어려움을 겪는 청년의 도움요청 과정과 그 경험의 의미를 탐색하고 청년 친화적인 정신건강서비스의 실천과 정책의 방향성을 제시하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 의도적 표집 방법에 근거하여 우울증을 포함한 정신건강 문제를 경험한 5명의 청년을 모집하고 개별 심층면접을 통해 정신건강 문제 양상 및 자각, 도움요청 필요성 인식, 도움요청 자원 검색과 선택, 서비스 이용 과정과 결과에 대해 질적 자료를 수집했다. 수집된 자료는 귀납적 개방 코딩 방식에 따라 주제를 도출하는 방법으로 분석하였고, 도출된 의미단위들은 총 5개 상위범주와 14개 하위범주로 유목화되었다. 청년의 정신건강 도움요청 경험을 설명하는 5개의 상위범주는 ‘청년의 고되고 불안정한 삶’, ‘도움요청의 지난한 과정’, ‘청년 당사자의 서비스 체험’, ‘잃을 줄 알았지만 얻은 게 많은 과정’, ‘청년 소비자의 평가와 제안’으로 나타났다. 결론에서는 정신건강서비스 소비자로서의 정체성을 가지고 있는 청년의 도움요청 행동 촉진과 관련하여, 제공자의 실천적 성찰에 대한 시사점과 전달체계 개선 방향을 제언하였다.
The purpose of this study was to verify the serial mediation effects of prospects and social isolation in the relationship between relative deprivation and suicide of youth. For achieving this purpose, an on-line survey was conducted using questionnaire, based on quota sampling of youth 19~39 years old. Total 521 subjects were tested by using PROGRESS macro 4.0. Following were verified as the results of this study. First, relative deprivation had a significant effect on suicide of the youth. Second, relative deprivation had a negative effect on prospects and social isolation. Finally, as for the medication effects, prospects and social isolation had a significantly negative mediation effects in the relationship between relative deprivation and suicide of the youth. Based on these results, the present study discussed practical suggestions to improve effective suicide prevention services for youth.
본 연구는 사회 구조적 불평등이 심화되는 시기에 청년층이 느끼는 상대적 박탈감이 자살에 미치는 영향과 그 관계에 미치는 미래전망과 사회적 고립의 순차적 매개효과를 확인하고자 하였다. 이러한 경로 과정을 살펴보기 위해 비례할당을 통하여 모집된 전국 19~39세 청년층 521명을 대상으로 PROCESS macro 4.0을 활용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 상대적 박탈감이 자살위험에 직접적인 영향력을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 상대적 박탈감이 높을수록 사회적 고립의 수준이 증가하고, 미래전망을 부정적으 로 생각할수록 사회적 고립이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 상대적 박탈감이 높을수 록, 미래전망을 부정적으로 인식할수록, 사회적 고립 수준이 높을수록 자살위험의 수준 이 증가하였다. 즉, 상대적 박탈감이 미래전망과 사회적 고립을 순차적으로 매개하여 자살위험에 영향을 미치는 효과가 유의미하게 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 청년층의 자살을 예방하기 위한 사회 통합적 지원체계 개발 및 자살 예방정책 그리고 서비스 방안에 대하여 논의하였다.
