The Effect of Family Strengths on Depression among Parents of Children with Disabilities: The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem

Abstract

This study examined the effect of family strengths on depression among parents of children with disabilities and empirically examined the mediating effect of self-esteem in this relationship. Through this, the study aimed to provide a basis for policy development and practical intervention strategies to strengthen psycho-emotional support for families of children with disabilities. The research questions proposed were as follows: First, how do family strengths affect self-esteem and depression among parents of children with disabilities? Second, does self-esteem mediate the relationship between family strengths and depression among parents of children with disabilities?The data used for analysis were drawn from the 4th wave of the Panel Survey on the Lives of Persons with Disabilities. The study population consisted of parents of adolescents with disabilities who identified themselves as either “father” or “mother” in relation to the panel respondent. A total of 347 participants were included in the final analysis. Descriptive statistics were generated using SPSS, and the mediation analysis was conducted using the SPSS PROCESS macro. The results indicated that higher levels of family strengths were significantly associated with higher self-esteem and lower levels of depression among parents of children with disabilities. Furthermore, self-esteem was found to partially mediate the relationship between family strengths and depression. This study presented policy and practical implications that consider both family strengths and self-esteem to reduce depression among parents of children with disabilities.

초록

본 연구는 장애아동 부모의 가족건강성이 우울에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, 이 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과를 실증적으로 검증하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 장애아동 가족의 심리정서적 지원 강화를 위한 정책 수립과 실천 현장에서의 개입 방향의 근거를 제시하고자 하였다. 이에 본 연구가 제시한 연구문제는 첫째, 가족건강성은 장애아동을 둔 부모의 자아존중감과 우울에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가? 둘째, 자아존중감은 장애아동 부모의 가족건강성과 우울 간의 관계를 매개하는가?이다. 분석 자료는 장애인 삶 패널조사 제4차 자료를 활용하였으며, 연구대상은 패널과의 관계에서 ‘아버지’ 또는 ‘어머니’로 응답한 10대 장애아동의 부모, 347명을 대상으로 하였다. 자료 분석은 SPSS를 이용한 기초분석 후, SPSS PROCESS 매크로를 적용하여 매개효과를 검증하였다. 가족건강성이 높을수록 장애아동 부모의 자아존중감은 유의하게 높고 우울 수준은 유의하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 가족건강성과 우울 간의 관계에서 자아존중감은 부분 매개효과를 가지는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 장애아동 부모의 우울을 완화하기 위해 가족건강성과 자아존중감을 함께 고려한 정책적, 실천적 함의를 제시하였다.
