This study explored the meaning of recovery and the conditions for maintaining long-term recovery among individuals with drug addiction within the context of Korea’s policy shift from punishment-oriented approaches toward treatment and rehabilitation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven individuals who had maintained abstinence for more than five years without cross-addiction, and the data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis within a generic qualitative research framework. The findings showed that long-term recovery maintenance was shaped through the interaction of multiple recovery resources, including meaning systems, self-regulation, and relational support. Participants sustained recovery by reconstructing their identities and everyday lives through community participation and daily practices. However, social stigma, punishment-oriented systems, and limited treatment and rehabilitation infrastructures functioned as structural barriers to sustained recovery. The findings suggest that long-term recovery maintenance should be understood within the interaction of individual, relational, and social conditions, and highlight the need to strengthen support for the maintenance stage and to establish long-term recovery-oriented systems of care.
Children with brain tumors face a high risk of neurological sequelae that heavily burdens caregivers, yet few domestic studies have examined caregivers' experiences across the full treatment trajectory. This study explored the caregiving experiences and structures of meaning among caregivers of pediatric brain tumor patients, from diagnosis and active treatment to early survivorship. In-depth interviews with 15 caregivers were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. Experiences during treatment yielded three themes: "the weight of caregiving beyond one's capacity and a crisis of life," "coping to endure an uncontrollable situation," and "meaning and relationships reconstructed through information and solidarity." Post-treatment experiences yielded three themes: "persistent uncertainty and burden within caregiving that does not end," "expectations and caregiving roles realigned to a new reality," and "the search for sustainable caregiving that rebuilds life's balance."Caregivers' emotional suppression was a strategic adaptive mechanism rather than mere avoidance; gaps in formal support were filled by informal peer self-help networks; and treatment completion marked not relief but the onset of long-term caregiving compounded by late effects, recurrence fears, and social stigma. These findings call for a multidisciplinary, life-course psychosocial support system differentiated by treatment stage, with institutional linkage of caregiver self-help networks.
