This study examined the mediating effects of perceived social conflict and trust in the social safety net on the relationship between perceived discrimination and mental health. It also investigated whether these structural relationships differ between younger and middle-aged adults. Using data from the 2022 Seoul Mental Health Survey, a total of 1,570 participants (816 young adults aged 19-39 and 754 middle-aged adults aged 50-69) were analyzed. A multi-group structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was applied, with perceived discrimination as the independent variable, perceived social conflict and trust in the social safety net as mediators, and mental health (a latent variable composed of depression, anxiety, and stress) as the dependent variable. The results showed that perceived discrimination had a significant negative effect on mental health in both age groups. The indirect pathway of “perceived discrimination → perceived social conflict → mental health” was significant across both groups, while the indirect pathway of “perceived discrimination → trust in the social safety net → mental health” differed between the two groups. Among middle-aged adults, trust in the social safety net was a protective factor mitigating mental health deterioration, whereas this mediation was not significant among younger adults. These findings imply that reducing discrimination and alleviating social conflict are essential for improving mental health across generations. Furthermore, while restoring trust in existing safety-net systems is crucial for the middle-aged population, developing new, tangible forms of social safety-net policies that address the specific anxieties of younger adults is necessary.
This study aims to analyze acculturation types of marriage migrant women in Korea based on Berry’s (1997) acculturation theory. Using data from the 2024 Multicultural Families Survey (N = 12,862), this study conducted latent class analysis (LCA) and BCH three step multinomial logistic regression to identify factors associated with latent groups. The study identified Berry’s four acculturation types―integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization―in the Korean context. Acculturation types among marriage migrant women varied significantly not only by individual characteristics (e.g., age and length of residence) but also by relational and structural factors, including spousal and parent–child relationship satisfaction, parenting efficacy, legal status, and experiences of discrimination. The findings offer several policy related implications.
This study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the motivations for establishing and participating in cooperatives among cancer survivors using qualitative research methods. The findings reveal that the motivations for forming these cooperatives extend beyond simple economic necessity, encompassing multidimensional factors such as addressing institutional gaps, ensuring psychological stability, and maintaining continuity in lifestyle management. In particular, participants faced institutional limitations within the existing healthcare system, including financial burdens during periods without insurance coverage, constraints on accessing long-term care, and rising costs of non-reimbursable treatments. Consequently, they expected the co-operative to function as an alternative social safety net to bridge these gaps. These co-operatives offer practical strategies for comprehensively overcoming economic, social, and psychological challenges through mutual support networks and low-cost long-term care and lifestyle management services funded by contributions and membership fees. Furthermore, participants transcended the role of passive beneficiaries, gaining agency as active service providers and decision-makers within the co-operative. This study is distinguished from existing literature by its focus on the unique nature of co-operative participation among cancer survivors and the potential of their proactive solidarity. It suggests the possibility of a shift in the healthcare paradigm away from a curative-centered healthcare system toward a community-based model focused on prevention and daily lifestyle practices.
