Abstract

Although previous studies reported that the married showed better health than the unmarried, there exists the possibility of heterogeneity according to social subgroups. This study examines the relationship between marital condition (satisfying marriage, unsatisfying marriage, never married, divorced, widowed) and health, verifying the interaction effects with age or income. Using a nationally representative sample of Korean adult men and women, OLS regression analyses were conducted. In the results, first, the health of the never married was not better than those whose relationship with their spouse was not satisfactory (reference group). Second, among women, the divorced had worse health than the married whose relationship with their spouse was not satisfactory. Third, the health disadvantage of the never married since middle age increased with age. Forth, among men, the health disadvantage of the divorced since middle age increased with age. Fifth, among women, the widowed in advanced old age had better health than persons whose relationship with their spouse was not satisfactory. Sixth, the health disadvantage of the divorced increased as income decreased. Seventh, among women, the health advantage of those whose relationship with their spouse was satisfactory increased as income decreased. Finally, the health advantage of marriage was not smaller for women than for men. These findings provide implications for policy intervention by identifying vulnerable groups that experience health disadvantages. Divorced men in old age and the low-income divorced may need social assistance for their health.

This paper explores the quality of life of people ‘living alone’ at mid-life in Korea. There can be two opposing arguments on this population comprising predominantly single people. It is possible to predict that their levels of subjective well-being and social engagement are relatively lower, considering a positive effect of marriage on happiness and life satisfaction. By contrast, many recent studies have asserted that they are not only high in self-esteem and life satisfaction, but they also actively engage in social activities. Given that the utility of marriage has gradually declined, this perspective is seemingly valid. However, it entails several methodological shortcomings especially failing to compare with those who ‘living together.’ Hence this study, which tests the validity of these two hypotheses, aims to identify an empirical reality of living alone through analyzing the most recent 2010 Korean census individual-level microdata. It employs the negative binomial regression analysis on the sample of 151,494 individuals aged 30 to 49 including 13,548 cases who are living alone. It finds that the average number of membership in voluntary associations that participated at least once during the last year for people living alone is around 8 percent lower than for people living together, which is statistically significant controlling for other socio-demographic variables such as marital status, educational attainment, and economic activity status. This efficacy of being one-person household is very robust as it appears all characteristics of independent variables; for instance, divorced people who live together tend to engage more social activities than those who live alone. Thus, one-person household per se has a negative association with social engagement level. Meanwhile, this level also differs among people who live alone: those who have a spouse, are more educated, and spend longer time for income-related work are more likely to participate in social activities.

Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), this study analyzes the relationship between husbands’ and wives’ socioeconomic resources and marital dissolution. Compared to prior research, this study investigates the impacts of husbands’ and wives’ individual and couple characteristics using longitudinal couple data compiled from the KLIPS. Overall, despite the wide range of socioeconomic variables investigated, such as education, earnings, work status, ratio of wives’ earnings relative to total couple earnings, dual-earner status, only limited variables are found to have significant effects on marital dissolution. First, consistent with prior research, this study finds that husbands’ education is negatively associated with marital dissolution. Second, with respect to wives’ socioeconomic resources, this study finds that the effect of wives’ education is contingent upon marital cohorts and marital duration. The data indicate that the positive impact of wives’ education becomes weaker across marriage cohorts and marital duration.
